Ingredient Head-to-Head

L-Citrulline vs Caffeine

The two headline pre-workout ingredients: one is a stimulant, one is not. The real question is what you want your pre-workout to actually do.

Verdict

Want the single biggest performance lever, pick caffeine. Training late, caffeine-sensitive, or chasing pumps, pick citrulline. They are better together than either one alone.

Effective dose
Aim for 3 to 6g of pure L-citrulline, or 6 to 8g of citrulline malate (which is only part citrulline), taken 30 to 60 minutes pre-workout. A huge number of pre-workouts list citrulline but dose it well below this, which is exactly the kind of under-dosing our scoring penalises.
The effective range is roughly 3 to 6mg per kg of bodyweight, taken 30 to 60 minutes before training. For an 80kg person that is about 240 to 480mg. We heavily penalise products that pack more than 400mg into a single serving, because past that point side effects (jitters, racing heart, crashed sleep) tend to outweigh any extra benefit.
Safety
Citrulline is well tolerated even at higher doses, with no meaningful safety concerns for healthy people. It is gentler on the stomach than arginine, which is one reason it has largely replaced it in modern formulas.
Health bodies put the safe daily ceiling for most healthy adults at around 400mg from all sources. Tolerance builds quickly, sensitivity varies a lot between people, and caffeine within about 8 to 10 hours of bed can wreck sleep quality. If you train in the evening, a stim-free pre-workout is the smarter call.

The key difference

Caffeine is a central-nervous-system stimulant with strong evidence for performance. L-citrulline is a non-stimulant blood-flow ingredient with moderate evidence for pumps and a minor endurance gain. Caffeine makes you feel switched on; citrulline makes the muscle feel full.

Should you take both?

Yes, and most complete pre-workouts pair them. If caffeine keeps you awake, a citrulline-led stim-free formula still delivers the pump without wrecking your sleep.

Frequently asked

Is citrulline or caffeine better before a workout?

Caffeine gives the bigger, better-evidenced boost to output and focus. Citrulline is the stim-free option for pumps and blood flow, and the smarter pick for evening training.

Can I take citrulline and caffeine together?

Yes — they are commonly combined in pre-workouts, since one drives central stimulation and the other drives blood flow. Skip the caffeine if you train close to bedtime.
